Blog – Ljubljana Day One
So here we are… one car journey, one flight, a dragon, a gorgeous river side meal and too much walking already.
Summed up: It’s great to be travelling again.
At 6.30am, Michelle and I woke up, jumped in the shower and headed off to start our long weekend in Ljubljana – the so far, so spectacular capital of Slovenia.
Allowing several spare hours for the M25, we arrived at Gatwick with time not only to kill, but to stage a full Game of Thrones style massacre.
Still, it allowed us the chance to kick off our trip in gluttonous style: with a big, unhealthy breakfast to keep us going while avoiding budget airline food.
Fast forward a few hours and we were safely in Ljubljana, through customs and at our hotel.
It being a trip with my good lady wife we were soon heading off to a marathon expo – yep, Shell will be running the Ljubljana half marathon on Sunday.
While there she met the interesting chap below.
Why a giant green dragon?
Legend has it, that many centuries ago, this fearsome lizard lurked in the marshes that surround the Ljubljanica river.
Apparently it eventually met its end at the hands of Jason; he of Argonaut and Golden Fleece fame.
Once we’d picked up Michelle’s race number it was a quick walk to the pretty centre of Ljubljana.
The entirely pedestrianised area is centered around the Ljubljanica river.
The views there are stunning, as was the food we had at one of the riverside bars – complete with dessert in the form of two of the largest crepes we’ve ever eaten.
Tomorrow will bring a proper exploration of the city centre, but for now here are a few pictures to give you an idea of the beauty of Ljubljana.
